Sir Charles Santley (1834 – 1922)
This website is about an exhibition on the Victorian opera singer Sir Charles Santley. The exhibition, entitled Sir Charles Santley: A Victorian Celebrity, will be shown at Liverpool Central Library throughout April 2016. The exhibition features a range of items from the remarkable Santley collections which are held at Liverpool Record Office. This includes a box of his personal effects which had been lying forgotten in a dusty basement for very many years!
My name’s Anna and I’m the curator of this exhibition. I am currently writing a PhD on Santley and other male opera singers of the nineteenth-century. The exhibition is based on my research. Have a look at my website to find out more about me and my work.
Every day in April I’ll be blogging (and tweeting!) about a different item from the exhibition. These posts will build a picture of Santley, using quotes from his highly amusing autobiographies. In addition, a short documentary about Santley is currently being produced and will be uploaded to this website when it’s complete.
If you’d like to get in touch, my email address is firstname.lastname@example.org
I hope you enjoy this exhibition as much as I’ve enjoyed working on it!
